What do breast cancer and colon cancer have in common? Actually, they may have a lot more in common than you might think. Studying a potential link through a protein called Villin is Dr. Seema Khurana. Khurana, professor in the University of Houston’s Department of Biology and Biochemistry, has recently received an award of $1.8 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study Villin and its potential connection to certain types of cancer. As climate change and global warming become increasingly severe problems around the world, researchers are looking into ways to monitor and forecast the pollution that contributes to this borderless issue. At the University of Houston, Dr. Yunsoo Choi (YC), assistant professor of Atmospheric Chemistry, Atmospheric Modeling and Remote Sensing, has developed a short-term pollution model for southeast Texas and the continental U.S. named the System of air POllution forecasting with Captain Kirk (SPOCK). Chemists are faced with a challenge: An effective drug has been discovered, but they now need to make it in a way that accounts for its very specific form and shape. Sounds simple? Not always. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has recently awarded Dr. Don Coltart, assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Houston, a grant to help him develop a mechanism to create certain drugs and compounds through a process called asymmetric alkylation of a ketone. UH’s Division of Research (DOR) had a chance to talk to Coltart about his upcoming research and its potential impact in the scientific community.
The National Science Foundation has awarded Dr. Craig Glennie, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, Dr. Shishir Shah, associate professor of computer science, Dr. Ioannis Kakadiaris, professor of computer science, and Dr. Cumaraswamy Vipulanandan, professor of civil and environmental engineering, a grant to develop algorithms that analyze damaged infrastructure after a natural disaster has occurred. Glennie, the principal investigator for this project, sat down with the University of Houston’s Division of Research to talk about this multi-disciplinary project.
Dr. Wallace Dominey, research associate professor at UH’s College of Education, with co-directors Dr. Rebecca Forrest at the UH College of Natural Science and Mathematics and Dr. Fritz Claydon at the UH Cullen College of Engineering, received a grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to develop a Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Teacher Professional Learning. Dominey met with the Division of Research to discuss the center and how it will impact teachers in the greater Houston area.
